WINFIELD TWP — Township supervisors gave final approval to plans from The Crossroads Group and TowerNorth Development to construct a cell tower along North Pike Road, near the border with Buffalo township, during their meeting Thursday night, May 29. The monopole tower would be 194 feet high, including a 4-foot lightning rod, and will be leased by Verizon Wireless.

PHOENIX — The remote mountain road where two teenagers were found dead is so isolated that most drivers on State Route 87 wouldn’t even notice the narrow turnoff leading to it. The teens, identified as Pandora Kjolsrud, 18, and 17-year-old Evan Clark, were found dead in a remote area near Mount Ord on May 27. The road to Mount Ord begins just off the northbound side of SR 87, near the top of a mountain pass. At first glance, it appears to go nowhere.

The Saxonburg Police Department is waving goodbye to its K-9 Bolt, and his handler less than a year after they were welcomed onto the force. At a special meeting held April 25, the Saxonburg borough council approved the resignation of K-9 handler officer Mark Heider. His K-9, Bolt — a German shepherd trained to detect narcotics by smell — will leave the department with him.

This March, the Mars Area Public Library was awarded a $10,000 grant as part of the American Library Association’s “Libraries Transforming Communities” program. At a Community Conversation at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, the library will showcase new resources funded by the grant, which are aimed at aiding vision-impaired and disabled patrons. “Our focus is to help community members with low vision or vision impairment,” said library director Janae Callihan.

A Cranberry Township man is being held after an incident early Sunday morning, May 25, in which police said he repeatedly assaulted a woman after crashing his car in front of her apartment. Mark A. Reisert, 59, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault; misdemeanor driving under the influence, simple assault and strangulation; and summary harassment, careless driving, driving without a license, failure to stop and render aid, and failure to notify police of an accident.
