PHOENIX — The trial of Cleophus Cooksey Jr., accused of carrying out a three-week killing spree in 2017, began Monday after years of delays. Cooksey is charged with eight counts of first-degree murder and faces the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors have charged Cooksey with killing eight people across the Valley between November and December of 2017. The charges also include armed robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping.

PHOENIX — As wildfire season approaches, state lawmakers are trying to figure out how to prevent Arizona from facing the kinds of devastating fires that hit California last year. The House Ad Hoc Committee on Fire Preparedness held its first of four public meetings Thursday to hear from fire officials, utility companies and state agencies about how to better manage the risk. Wildfires are getting worse, and more Arizonans are living in high-risk zones.

The pool of content available at Butler County’s nine public libraries has shrunk somewhat. Its regional library district is no longer in a reciprocal lending agreement with three other Pennsylvania library districts. As a result, library cardholders in Butler County can no longer borrow digital materials from libraries in the Seneca, Oil Creek and Erie library districts.
