When Doctor Who returned to our television screens in 2005 after a 16-year hiatus — save the 1996 TV movie — it wasn’t just the new Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, who breathed life into the veteran BBC sci-fi. Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, the Doctor’s first companion (and some might argue best), immediately became a hit with viewers and set a high standard for strong travelling partners for the Time Lord over the ensuing 20 years.
