U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will double the tariffs on steel imports to 50%. “We are going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States,” Trump told steelworkers during a rally in Pittsburgh. “Nobody is going to get around that.”A post on social media from the White House said the boosted duties would go into place next week.

The latest ACT Research For-Hire Trucking Index reflects ongoing weakness for carriers, as the effect of tariffs is beginning to be seen in the data. But shippers saw a more favorable March, thanks largely to falling diesel prices. The April version of ACT Research’s For-Hire Trucking Index reflected weak freight volumes and decreased capacity. For the second straight month, the Volume Index was weak, with a reading of 43.4, down slightly from March.

A new report says nearly two-thirds of Canadian businesses want the government to work to reduce the barriers to internal trade to improve productivity. A KPMG poll of 250 business leaders in Canada found that 64% of those surveyed say the government should remove interprovincial trade barriers and harmonize regulations and credentials as a top priority.

A Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) investigation into the import of Thaco container chassis from Vietnam by Ocean Trailer has determined the activity doesn’t circumvent a Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) ruling. CBSA initiated an investigation on Nov. 25, 2024, after complaints from Max-Atlas International.

The Cornwall, Ont.-native and avid cyclist has for years considered visiting all the company’s terminals – spread across 900 km between Drummondville, Que., and London, Ont. — via road bike. He decided to take the plunge this year, and in doing so raise some funds within the organization for employees who were coping with uncovered medical expenses.
