They call it Shelbyville Beach, tucked away in their back yard in eastern Shelbyville. Jane Martin and housemate Janet Childress — along with a few friends — spent eight years creating this backyard lido. A mighty wind that blew through Kentucky March 3 damaged homes, cars, and barns in Shelby County, but none fared worse than a home about a mile from I-64. The 70-mph gusts that left Doug and Claudia Bell homeless and almost killed Doug, who, moments before their giant oak tree toppled, was relaxing in the easy chair in his den. That den is now a pile of rubble. Doug was watching television about 4 p.m. when the power went off — which probably saved his life.

Veteran Sentinel-News reporter Tammy Shaw has been named news editor of the newspaper, replacing James Mulcahy, who re-retired last week. Shaw, whose newspaper career started at the Henry County Local in 2017, has been with The Sentinel-News since 2019. She was a features writer for several magazines. Shaw wants the readers to know exactly what government is doing. “Transparency is what I’m looking for,” she said.
