It’s not every day that a new coach inherits a team with as much talent and experience as New Albany tennis. Josh Griffin has been making the most of it. The Bulldogs are seeking their seventh consecutive team state championship as the MHSAA state tournament gets underway. Jonathan Ashley won his 500th career game on Friday when the Ingomar Falcons topped Water Valley 54-40. Ashley, the son of the late Ingomar coach Norris Ashley, took over for his father ahead of the 2012-13 season. Since then, he has reached three state championships, won two and been named the Daily Journal’s Coach of the Year twice. Before Ingomar, Ashley spent six years as the head coach at Myrtle, where he reached two 1A state semifinals and a title game while going 158-65.

This past week, a longtime dream came to fruition in Booneville. Booneville High School has opened a new multipurpose facility just north of the basketball gym on Jim Drewry Drive. The facility will now be the primary field used for junior high football, soccer, track and field and tennis. The Blue Devils opened the new turf field on Thursday, when the boys varsity soccer team hosted Nettleton in a 7-0 victory.

OXFORD - After a tough road trip, the Ole Miss women returned home and bounced back in a big way. Ole Miss used a complete offensive effort and another strong defensive performance to beat Vanderbilt 87-59 at the SJB Pavilion on Thursday. All five starters had at least 10 points, and the Rebels held the Commodores to their lowest point total of the season. "I'll tell you one thing," Ole Miss coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin said.

FULTON – Tuesday night’s tilt between Ripley and Itawamba AHS was a rollercoaster. Once it settled, the Indians were on top. Itawamba used strong first and third quarters to beat Ripley 49-44. With the win, the Indians (9-7, 3-0) moved into the top spot in Region 1-4A. “We’re still growing and getting better,” IAHS coach Darryl Wilson said. “Ripley fouled and kept coming and kept coming and kept coming, which I knew they would because, every year I play them, they compete like that.

STARKVILLE – On Sunday afternoon, the Mississippi State Bulldogs showed what they’re capable of, but also that big improvements need to be made. Mississippi State's women led by as many as 11 points over the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks, but ultimately lost 95-68 at the Humphrey Coliseum. What MSU was capable of showed early in the game. Both sides struggled to score in the game’s first five minutes, but then Mississippi State went on a 14-4 run to take a 16-7 lead.

Tupelo four-star defensive end JaReylan McCoy has committed to LSU. He announced the news at the Under Armour Next All-America Game in Orlando on Thursday. Tennessee and USC were the other finalists in his recruiting process. McCoy held offers from 22 FBS schools, which included 12 SEC schools. McCoy was ranked by On3 as the No. 11 defensive lineman in the country and the No. 6 prospect in Mississippi's Class of 2026. He joins what On3 ranks as the No. 7 recruiting class in the country.

INGOMAR - In their return to action on Friday night, the Ingomar Falcons handled business against a fellow area power. Ingomar, the No. 3 girls team in the Daily Journal rankings, got going after a slow first quarter to beat No. 7 Biggersville 73-53. "Definitely some rust, but Biggersville defended well early on, for sure, they defended really well," Ingomar coach Trent Adair said.
