HOPE — Simeon Wasil has been reliant on the bump the past two years. The Hauser senior starting pitcher went 6-0 with a 1.86 ERA last year and is off to a fast start again this season for the Class A No. 3 Jets. As effective as he’s been pitching, he has been just as effective at the plate as one of the top offensive producers, as well. Wasil trains at Inner Circle Pitching Academy in Franklin and does weighted ball work. He said it has helped in an increase in his velocity.

The Columbus North bats picked up where they left off Monday night. The Bull Dogs collected 18 hits as a team and picked up their first Conference Indiana victory with a 15-2 win over Bloomington North in five innings Tuesday. They had pounded out 17 hits in a 12-4 win Monday at Columbus East. “Having 27 runs on (35) hits in back-to-back nights, I’ll take that every day,” Columbus North coach TJ Jarvis said. “I’m really proud of them.

Columbus North trailed early in each set Monday night and couldn’t recover. The Bull Dogs rallied to keep a couple of the sets close, but the early deficit was too much to overcome in a 25-22, 25-10, 25-23 boys volleyball loss against Franklin Central. “We struggled with it kind of all year,” North coach Jeff Case said.

Columbus East equaled visiting Greenfield-Central with nine hits Thursday night, but the Cougars got the extra hit necessary. The Olympians couldn’t string together the hits in an 8-2 softball loss. “We hit that ball OK. That pitcher (Addie Heacox) is a nice pitcher. If she got ahead of you, you were hitting her pitch, and she can spin it. She did a nice job,” East coach Rusty Brummett said.

Koryn Greiwe was one win shy of a national championship. Greiwe and the Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball team fell in the NAIA title game to Dordt (Iowa) last month. It’s a big step forward after not making it out of the Round of 16 a year ago. The Wildcats were hot to start the season by going 23-0. They finished the season 34-3. “As a team, we had a great season,” said Greiwe, a 2022 Columbus East graduate.
