The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring the Carolina coastline for potential tropical development by the end of the week. Right now, the NHC is giving this region a 10% chance of becoming a named storm over the next seven days; its window for cyclogenesis likely much shorter. Regardless of development, a broad area of low pressure will likely sweep along our coast between Wednesday night and Saturday morning, bringing scattered storms to many North and South Carolina beaches.

June’s first workweek is off to a sunny start, but our third-straight day of hazy skies has dimmed and grayed what would otherwise be a bright and blue day. Canadian wildfire smoke drawn in from the northwest continues to be the culprit of the haziness, but clearer skies steadily build back in this week as the jet stream pushes eastward and southeasterly surface winds return.

We’ve seen plentiful sunshine for May’s final day, but smoke from Canadian wildfires nearly 2,000 miles away have dimmed what would have normally been a bright afternoon. The haze will linger for the next few days ahead as a strong northwesterly jet stream keeps us tapped into the smoke. To make matters worse, a sluggish cold front to our north will stall over the Carolinas on Sunday, yanking eastward an area of low pressure, which will give rain chances a bump as we close out the weekend.

Another cloudy day is underway across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, but highs in the Piedmont and Foothills have largely found their way into the 80s in spite of the grayness. Scattered showers and storms have started to erupt south and east of I-85; the rain will become more widespread as we head into the evening and overnight hours. While the severe threat is very low, we may see a few heavy storms, especially south and east of the Metro.

After one of the coolest May days in Charlotte history, the weather finally begins to act its age again as we close out the final workweek of the month. Mostly cloudy skies and higher humidity levels overnight will keep temperatures on the mild side in the 50s and 60s as we wake up Thursday morning. Despite the mostly cloudy skies, steady southwesterly flow will push most locations in the Piedmont and Foothills into the mid-to-lower 80s.
