    The Tour de France VIP village is filled with champions of old. Though, in the case of Marcel Kittel, the not so old. Kittel, one of the greatest sprinters of his generation, retired in 2019 at the age of 31, but he is on hand at this year’s race hosting guests for the Tour, not to mention enjoying a front-row seat for the racing. It of course comes as no surprise that he has taken particular interests in the sprints.

    Raphaël Géminiani would have loved to be at stage seven of this year’s Tour de France. He would have loved analysing the duel between Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogačar in the time trial to Gevery-Chambertin. And he would have loved the local wine. I can see him now in fact, holding court with a glass of local Burgundy, opining on the exploits of the day and recounting those of legends like Fausto Coppo and Jacques Anquetil.

    One of the most anticipated stages in this year’s Tour de France is stage nine on Sunday, a newly anointed gravel stage, hailed as the stage of the chemins blancs, or the white roads. For the Tour de France, it’s a first. But really, this foray into gravel has been years in the making.
