    About this wine Champagne Billecart-Salmon was founded in 1818 in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ near Epernay. It remains family-owned and run; Mathieu Roland-Billecart represents the seventh generation here, following in the footsteps of founders Nicolas-François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon. In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest.

    Along with his colleague Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling returns to Bolgheri, the Tuscan coastal region he first visited 38 years ago. There they tasted almost 200 wines, mostly from the 2021 and 2022 vintages. It’s been 38 years since I first travelled to Bolgheri to report on a new winery, Ornellaia, that’s now one of the leading names in this coastal region of Tuscany, and ever since I’ve had a soft spot for the area’s wines, especially the reds.
