ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has yet to say if she’s running for Governor. However, if she does decide to run, one assemblyman would like to be considered for her Congressional district. While there is currently not a Republican gubernatorial candidate, Assemblyman Robert Smullen said if Congresswoman Elise Stefanik does run for governor, he’d be interested in representing the North Country down in Washington.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)—Among the bills that didn’t pass this legislative session is the New York for All Act. The bill would prohibit officers, state agencies, and state employees from inquiring about someone’s immigration status without a judicial warrant from the federal government. Murad Awawdeh, President of the New York Immigration Coalition, said people shouldn’t have to worry about being handed over to ICE if they call police for help.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– Assemblymembers left Albany on Tuesday without voting on the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure bill. “The plastic pollution problem is not going away, and neither are we,” said Judith Enck, President of Beyond Plastics. According to Enck, the bill would have reduced single-use plastic packaging by 30% over the next 12 years. “It would have eliminated 17 of the most toxic chemicals used to make packaging,” said Enck.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Before Assemblymembers leave Albany, they could take up a bill requiring the packaging industry to pay for disposal of single-use plastics. The legislation also aims to reduce this plastic by 30% over the next twelve years. But this isn’t the only piece of environmental legislation being focused on. Assemblymembers on Monday approved a bill to repeal the 100-foot rule for natural gas hookups for new homes. It would make customers have to pay for the hookup themselves.
