Goal No. 1 for the GOP is to renew Trump’s 2017 individual tax cuts, which expire at the end of this year. “American families and small businesses urgently need tax relief in order to thrive,” argues U.S. Rep. Mike Carey, R-Columbus, whose district includes much of Clark and Miami counties. While Republicans agree on the overall goal — the details could get tricky.

The numbers are clear. In the 2024 campaign, President Donald Trump repeatedly vowed to crack down on illegal immigration across the border with Mexico. And the early data shows that’s what he has delivered. After a big surge during the Biden administration, the raw numbers plummeted to just over 11,000 migrant encounters at the border in both February and March — a nearly 95% drop from 189,000 in the same months in 2024.

The recent confirmation hearing for President Donald Trump's pick to head NASA was about what you would expect. Senators asked questions about space agency plans, and nominee Jared Isaacman - a billionaire tech entrepreneur - indicated that he wants NASA to focus both on missions to the moon and Mars. A trek to Mars is something favored by another billionaire, Elon Musk, who clearly has Trump's ear, raising obvious questions for senators about Musk's involvement in the NASA choice.

Ohio’s lawmakers split cleanly down party lines as the House voted 216-214 to approve the GOP budget framework. The Senate OK’d the same version last Saturday on a 51-48 vote. “The bicameral budget plan would lock in President Trump’s tax cuts, which are good for Ohio small businesses and working families,” said U.S. Sen. Jon Husted. Even though it took nearly three months to reach a deal, this actually was the easy part for GOP lawmakers.

Liberation Day lasted less than a week. There was no better place to watch President Donald Trump’s pirouette on tariffs than at a U.S. House hearing on Wednesday. For three and a half hours, U.S. Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer had been answering questions about Trump’s tariff plans, welcoming support from Republicans and parrying attacks by Democrats. Outside, the markets were again losing ground, when suddenly everything changed.

“The market is up 2,300,” northeast Ohio GOP U.S. Rep. Max Miller noted with a smile at a hearing with Trump’s top trade negotiator. The news from Trump arrived near the end of a four-hour hearing with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who was suddenly told by an aide of the president’s decision. That spurred sharp attacks from Democrats. “This is amateur hour,” declared U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., who posted a photograph of Greer being told by an aide about Trump’s tariff decision.
