The restaurant was founded in the 1940s by Elsa (Caraway) Bonner, who was born in 1889, at 3618 Linden Ave. in Dayton. The original name was Elsa’s Place. She was granted a permit for a one-story mercantile building in July 1945 at 3618 Linden Ave. at the cost of $25,000. Many of the articles we found in the archives mention the restaurant opening in 1945. However, we found a Dayton Daily News advertisement from June 1, 1940 announcing its grand opening.

Then Desch eventually became famous for his groundbreaking work on U.S. Navy bombes — the machines that broke Nazi German four-rotor enigma naval codes and helped to bring an end to World War II. Work at NCRColonel Edward A. Deeds hired Joseph Desch, an electrical engineer, in 1938 to be the head of NCR’s Electrical Research Laboratory. Desch worked as director of the NCR Electrical Research Department, and alongside Robert Mumma, he built the electronic accumulator in 1938.

• Main change: The bill would raise FERS (Federal Employees Retirement System) employee contribution requirements up to 4.4% of an employee’s salary, for all employees. The FERS contribution rate is currently a tiered system based on the employee’s hire date. Employees hired on or after January 1, 2014, contribute 4.4% of their salary. Employees hired in 2013 contribute 3.1% of their salary and employees hired in 2012 or earlier contribute 0.8% of their salary.

There was a time in Dayton when there were a dozen or more cafeterias operating downtown and around the city. Here are a few that we miss and a couple that are operating in case you are craving that cafeteria vibe. Sacksteder’s CafeteriaFounder Ray Sacksteder got started in business by selling hamburgers out of a tent to the men building the Broadway Street bridge in 1925. His home was near the bridge, and he later made it into a cafeteria.
