Do you need to access the county assessors office, recording, zoning or treasurer/auditors offices? If so, you can continue to visit the familiar 100 year old Carlton County Courthouse in downtown Carlton. The Carlton County Assessor’s office is keeping busy with notices and appeals season kicking off, said Kyle Holmes, county assessor. His is one of several offices still housed at the historical courthouse after the courts moved to the new Justice Center last fall.

The Carlton County Restorative Justice Program is still going strong since its inception about 15 years ago. They help youth recognize what they did wrong, how it harmed someone else and how to take accountability, as well as make amends. Donna Lekander is the only staff member who was there in the beginning.

Whether it’s veterans organizations, fetal heart monitoring technology or helping to update an aging community center, the Sturgeon Lake Area Lions Club is here to help. Their Facebook page shows photos of events sponsored by yellow vest wearing Lions members from their annual sunfishing contest, playgrounds, packing fruit or getting ready for the annual veterans ice fishing contest or their biggest fundraiser, the Thanksgiving meal.

Local emergency organizations and personnal accept awards for jobs well done. Jeffery Peterson, Pete Boyechko, the Kettle River fire department first responders and the Carlton County Dispatchers all received awards for their accomplishments and dedication recently. The Barnum Fire Department and Essentia EMS nominated Peterson for the Lifetime Achievement Award. He has a decades long history begining as an EMS and firefighter in 1980 when he joined the Brevator Fire Department.

Offering educational programs is just a small part of a state park naturalist’s job. “Programs are just the most public facing part of my job,” explained Kris Hiller, park naturalist at Jay Cooke State Park in Carlton. The interpretive presentations and activities are what most park enthusiasts see, but it only makes up 30 % of the job. Not all state parks are lucky enough to have a naturalist. Jay Cooke is the only one in Carlton County.
