Matthew Bohnsack will be representing the Moose Lake American Leion Post 379 as he heads to St. Johns University in June. The Moose Lake Junior will participate in hands on learning about local and state government. Students must be a Junior and must meet certain qualifications before being chosen by the Legion. Bohnsack plans to study English post-high school. “The connection between stories in literature to events in real life is intriguing,” Bohnsack said.

Many excited anglers begin preparing for the Minnesota fishing opener weeks in advance. They make sure their boats, motors and gear are ready to go, licences up to date and stalk nightcrawlers with a flashlight after soaking the lawn. If it’s still cold, eager anglers head to the nearest bait shop to buy fatheads, leeches or whichever bait is most likely to catch their fish of choice.

Don Bistram is retiring quietly after 45 years as the butcher behind the scenes at KJ’s Fresh Market in Moose Lake. He began working at the Holiday store at the age of 19 in 1979 after he attended a meat school. He was a constant fixture through the next four decades while the store underwent new owners and names, from Holiday, Market Place Foods and finally KJ’s. While Bistram grew up on a farm in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, he has lived in Barnum since the mid 1980s.

The Lowers are a fifth generation of owners helping to entertain audiences at their 100-plus year old Lake Theatre in Moose Lake, which still includes a player piano from times of yore.
