Dear Paul,With people living longer and putting increased pressure on the age pension, why would our government not be inclined to encourage parents by various means to set up superannuation accounts for their children from birth? We know compound interest is our friend, so rather than buying an investment property for the kids to inherit down the track, which many people can't afford anyway, would not putting, say, $15,000 into a super fund under the child's name be a better plan?

Negative gearing has resurfaced in political discussions, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese suggesting that the Treasury might be reconsidering this long-standing property tax incentive. However, Labor's bruising loss in the 2019 election still lingers, making it difficult to envision the government taking the gamble of upsetting property investors-particularly with the current housing crisis that we're in. Politically, it seems like an improbable move.

Global trading and investment platform eToro is tapping into the superannuation sector with the acquisition of Spaceship, in a deal worth as much as $80 million. eToro has agreed to acquire Spaceship, expanding its local business and suite of offerings. The Spaceship name and brand will remain in place. Under the deal, eToro will take over ownership of Spaceship Super, which merged to become a sub-plan of OneSuper earlier this year.

Insurers will no longer be able to use genetic test results to deny life insurance cover or increase premiums, with a total ban to be introduced by the government. Earlier this year, the government consulted on the use of genetic test results in underwriting life insurance policies, looking to address concerns around discriminatory practices, underinsurance, and a growing aversion among Australians to seeking possibly life-saving genetic testing.
