The Student Wellness program at Augusta University received a $12,600 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to help educate students on well-being, health and safety.
Funded through federal funds from the National Traffic Safety Administration, the grant will bring the Arrive Alive Tour to Augusta University.

Mark Myers, director of Augusta University’s New Student and Family Transitions, was honored at the 2024 Augusta State of Tourism: Connect & Celebrate event hosted by Destination Augusta, the Augusta Sports Council and Film Augusta.
During the event’s Augusta Tourism Awards ceremony, Myers received the 2024 Tourism Partner of the Year Award for hisexceptional collaboration with Destination Augusta.

Augusta University has exceeded enrollment goals for its ninth consecutive year, with a total of 11,584 students — a 9.8% increase over last year’s impressive numbers. This year’s historic growth spans both undergraduate and graduate programs, with 6,078 undergraduates and 5,506 graduates, professional and post-professional students enrolled.
“There’s tremendous momentum at Augusta University,” said AU President Russell T. Keen.

The Charlton County Board of Education met Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m., and member Cutis Nixon was absent. The board quickly approved the meeting’s agenda and moved onto to the consent agenda. The board approved the entire consent agenda, including the January 16 work session and regular meeting minutes, accounts payable, field trips, a SpyGlass Agreement, a MOU – Think Big, a facility use request and an Action Pact Agreement.

The Charlton County Board of Commissioners met Thursday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m. All commissioners were present. The meeting’s agenda, the February 1 meeting minutes and the financial report were approved. Next, the commissioners considered renewing the Georgia County Internship Program Grant Agreement. County Administrator Hampton Raulerson mentioned that the extension office applied for the grant with the state, which would provide $3,000 towards the internship.

The remains of Sgt. Kennedy L. Sanders passed through Folkston on Wednesday, February 14. She was laid to rest in Waycross the following Saturday. Sanders landed in Jacksonville, Florida, and the Waycross Police Department and Ware County Sheriff’s Office were in charge of the escort. Sanders was one of the three Army Reserve soldiers from Georgia killed in the Jordan drone strike on Sunday, January 28. All three of the soldiers received posthumous promotions in rank.

The Homeland City Council met Thursday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m. Council member Delbert Shelton was absent. The board initially adopted the January 11 regular meeting minutes and the January financial report. There were no committee or department updates. Under new business, the city adopted the RV ordinance after two readings. However, citizen Janna Simpson noted that the ordinance states it would hold three readings before adoption.

The Charlton County Board of Commissioners met Thursday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m. All members were present. The board adopted the amended agenda, and then approved the January 18 meeting minutes. The board approved a Resolution of Honor for the late Estella Fleming German. Her son, Harry, accepted the resolution in her honor. The resolution provided German’s personal and professional background.
