    Dan Storper, founder, creator and president of Putumayo World Music, has passed away. He died this morning in his home surrounded by his family, after a battle with cancer. He was 74-years-old. Storper started Putumayo as a namesake of his retail store that sold handcrafts and clothing from his many worldwide travels.

    Jimmy's Music Club will reopen at the end of summer 2025. Jimmy's is one of the more venerable and well-loved music clubs in the city. Located in the Carrollton neighborhood at 8200 Willow Street a block off South Carrollton Avenue, Jimmy's is top-of-mind for many New Orleans music lovers and has been for almost 50 years as it presented some of the most beloved performers in New Orleans and American music history (see just a couple of posters for the club below).

    The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, owner of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, has purchased Cosimo Matassa's original J&M Recording Studios for $2.3 million. The building is located at 840 North Rampart Street, corner Dumaine, across the street from Armstrong Park. The building is a landmark in the city's musical history and operated as Matassa's studio from 1945 through spring 1956.

    We are proud and happy to honor Irma Thomas as our "Forever Soul Queen" on this year's Jazz Fest Bible™ cover. I thought long and hard about who would grace it, and I couldn't think of a better subject than our musical queen and icon, Irma Thomas Jackson-even though Irma has graced our Jazz Fest issue several times (2003 and 2011). Irma is the epitome of talent, grace, intelligence and standing up for herself as a musician. She's now in her mid-eighties and is still performing.
