The best thing about Liberty St., one could argue, is the Michigan Theater. Along with hundreds of films every year, it hosts concerts, children’s theater, celebrity artists, and dozens of other major events. Its recreated historic sign is a landmark rivaled only by its sister theater a block away, the State. “Public Works is always looking for opportunities to improve services,” emails Ann Arbor public works manager Paul Matthews, “and this was an opportunity to try something new.” In December, city council approved a contract with Saline’s KBK Landscaping for up to $500,000 worth of “supplemental plowing” whenever four or more inches of snow are predicted. KBK owner Kris Krause, forty, says he’s been plowing since he was thirteen.

Dorrie Dils’ first job as a nurse was in an intensive care unit in Ohio. It was “a very busy Level 1 trauma center in Columbus,” she recalls. “When you work in a busy ICU like that, death is a part of your daily routine.”But for the survivors, she realized, some deaths felt better than others: When the person was an organ donor, the loss of life led to the gift of life.
