Security leaders are overconfident in their organization’s security posture while allowing vulnerability patching to fall by the wayside, new research suggests. According to penetration testing firm Cobalt’s 2025 State of Pentesting Report , only 48% of exploitable vulnerabilities uncovered during penetration testing are fixed – although this increases to 69% for those that have a severity rating of high or critical. Ninety-eight percent of businesses experienced a cyber attack in 2024, with 94% reporting associated financial losses of at least $500,000, according to the 2025 CyberScam Report from security firm BrandShield. Based on a survey of 200 CISOs from the UK, US, and Europe, the research discovered that suffering a cyber attack in 2024 had a significant impact on a CISO’s attitudes to emerging technologies and how much they should invest in cyber monitoring tools.
MSPs face scrutiny in Cyber Security and Resilience Bill

The UK government has called out managed services providers (MSPs) as critical to the UK’s cyber defenses in its proposed Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. A policy statement released on 1 April contains a section dedicated to the role and regulation of MSPs, stating that as they “play a critical role in the UK economy by offering core IT services to businesses” they’re a particularly attractive target for cyber criminals.

Cyber criminals widen the net to target tradespeople

Tradespeople are being warned to take the potential of cyber attacks more seriously after new research showed almost two-thirds had fallen victim to at least one successful attempt in the past. Commercial insurer NFU Mutual surveyed 500 tradespeople in the UK at the beginning of January 2025. Of the 61% who said they had been a victim of cyber crime in the past, 12% had customer information stolen.
OpenAI announces five-fold increase in bug bounty reward

OpenAI has announced a slew of new cybersecurity initiatives, including a 500% increase to the maximum award for its bug bounty program. In a blog post confirming the move, the organization set out plans to expand its cybersecurity grant program. So far, the tech giant has given funding to 28 research projects looking at both offensive and defensive security measures, including autonomous cybersecurity defenses, secure code generation, and prompt injection.
