According to ministry figures, 81 percent of all hens in Estonia's egg production businesses are currently kept caged. As the practice is set to be banned starting in 2035, transitioning to barn systems will require businesses to make significant investments, as all poultry housing equipment will need to be replaced. This, in turn, will also necessitate either the renovation of existing facilities or the construction of new ones, said Allan Tohver, CEO of Dava Foods Estonia.

Viljandi County was treated to beautiful winter weather this past weekend. Not everyone was a fan, however, as the wind and snowfall caused widespread power outages in the region. These outages left some areas without electricity for a few hours; others experienced intermittent outages all weekend. Generators had to be used to maintain water supply and keep heating plants operational.

Last weekend brought beautiful winter weather to Viljandi County. Unfortunately, the snowfall did not bring joy to everyone, as heavy snow and wind caused widespread power outages in the area. In some settlements, the electricity was out for several hours, while in others, power cuts were sporadic throughout the weekend. Generators had to be used to ensure water supply and keep heating plants running.

From the total ECoC budget of €26 million, almost €1 million remains available for use in 2025. This will have to be used to continue some of the ECoC events as well as tin the production of the required final documentation. A full report on the impact of the ECoC will be ready by September. The City of Tartu will contribute €800,000 while the other municipalities of South Estonia will contribute €163,000 to the budget for this year.

For several years, the government has wanted to restore the Tartu-Riga connection to improve accessibility. A longer-than-expected certification process meant the connection could not run between the cities during Tartu's year as the EU capital of culture. But most of the issues have now been overcome and the project can move forward, said Märt Ehrenpreis, Elron board member.
