As the 2025 hurricane season approaches, a University of South Florida professor is collecting oral histories of the hurricanes Helen and Milton. “My goal in collecting people’s stories about these storms and its aftermath is to document them for future generations, especially as we see shifts happening in the entity and culture of the community around us (as a result of the storms),” says Dr. Catherine Wilkins, an associate professor at USF’s Judy Genshaft honors college.

Anita Camacho, founder of the Tampa Bay Butterfly Foundation, is one of many local educators participating in Hope In Action Sept. 14 and 15, a weekend for people of all ages to join forces in protecting Tampa’s environment. It’s hosted by the Roots and Shoots Alliance of Tampa Bay, the local affiliate of the organization created by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991 to bring together young people from preschool to college age to work on environmental, conservation, and humanitarian issues.

What do Taylor Swift, Nikki Haley, Angela Davis and General Motors CEO Mary Barra have in common? They were all Girl Scouts. WaveMakers with Tom and Janet hosted two future WaveMakers, Emma Clough and Bianca Raises, on Tuesday, May 28. They’re both Girl Scouts who have earned a Gold Award for their community projects. It’s the most prestigious honor a Girl Scout can achieve, given only to girls whose chosen project creates a significant and sustainable positive change.

Four student producers of a 20-minute documentary about the redevelopment of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg joined WaveMakers to discuss the project on Tuesday, April 23. The documentary, “Addressing Broken Promises,” explores the past and future of the historically Black Gas Plant neighborhood that was razed in the 1980s to make way for a Major League Baseball stadium. The site is now set for redevelopment by the Tampa Bay Rays.

by and filed under Environment, News and Public Affairs. Seagrass is in decline around Florida, including Tampa and Sarasota bays, and that’s proven deadly for manatees. Tom Ries is trying to do something about that. Ries discussed his seagrass restoration efforts Tuesday on WMNF WaveMakers with Janet and Tom. Tampa Bay, which had seen an increase in sea grass for a decade, lost 4100 acres between 2020 and 2022. Sarasota Bay saw a 26 percent decline from 2016 to 2022.
