This week we're all het up about this dipshit, who thinks that because making music is hard, everyone will be delighted to use the ecologically disastrous plagiarism machine to do it. To me, this is an example of something I think about all the time: people think artistic work is special when it is not. Not really. Art is important, but no more important than engineering. It's impressive, but no more impressive than contract negotiation.

One of the things from the film Anora that has stuck in my mind is the tragedy of Ivan. It's a small part of the story, it doesn't matter as much as anything Anora says and does, but still, I keep thinking about it. He is an example of how extreme wealth discrepancy isn't good for anyone — not the people who have too much, not the people who don't have enough.

So a new 'publisher' is planning on 'disrupting' the industry with AI. They are essentially a vanity publisher – they ask authors to pay them thousands of dollars and, in exchange, they will give the authors AI generated covers, proofreading services, and distribution. It's an obvious grift, and it's boring, but the grifts aren't going to stop so I guess we don't get to stop talking about them.

Fascism is ascendant and we have run out of butter. It seemed for a while that things were maybe going to start getting a little bit better, maybe, just a little, not enough and with a great pile of caveats, but it seemed, for a bit, that we were going to start creeping slowly towards something a little bit better and now, don't we all feel like such chumps for having even that tiny shred of hope?
