    Van Zyl said that producers needed to focus on producing meat at a lower price in order to ensure the sustainability of the industry. “The guy who produces the cheapest meat per kilogram in South Africa will farm the longest,” he said. He explained that over the past 20 to 30 years, livestock producers had focused on high weaning weights. “But there is an increase in the cost of the maintenance of the cow when increasing weaning weights,” he said. As such, the cost of production was increasing.

    AbstractAfter nearly a month of arguments, South Africa’s Budget was finally passed in the National Assembly on 2 April. There were no amendments made to the Budget as delivered by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in March, and South Africans will see a 0,5% increase in VAT from 1 May. This will be followed by a 0,5% increase in VAT in 2026. Also, income tax brackets will not be adjusted for inflation.
