The Patriots were picked to finish first in the preseason Conference USA baseball poll, while the Gamecocks were picked to finish dead last. The two teams entered the three-game weekend series in a tie for third place in the league standings, however, with identical 5-4 records.

    JACKSONVILLE - Carson Hornung and Cooper Blauser got Jacksonville State's baseball team off to a strong start against Dallas Baptist on Friday night at Jim Case Stadium. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, things went south from there in what turned out to be an 8-1 loss to the Patriots. Hornung and Blauser hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first inning, but Jax State had nothing to show for it after Ace Williamson and Sam Silas went down on strikes to end the frame.
