Parity is high among the HBCU conferences, creating opportunities for some programs currently flying under-the-radar to creep their way into contention. The Allen men’s basketball team looked within the SIAC for its next leader. Longtime Morehouse men’s basketball coach Douglas Whittler is moving to Columbia, South Carolina, to become the Yellow Jackets’ next men’s basketball coach. A former All-SIAC First Team selection with the Morehouse men’s basketball team, Whittler began coaching as an assistant with the Maroon Tigers in 2009.

Here is a list of HBCU athletes who qualified for event finals at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Event: Men’s 400mIn the men’s 400m semifinals, Jordan Pierre ran a personal best 45.44 time to snag the qualifying spot in the finals. This marks the second time in the past three years that an HBCU athlete has qualified for the finals in this event.

Following the departure of former women’s basketball coach Tierra Terry, who was hired to take over a similar role at Winston-Salem State, the Virginia Union Panthers have announced her successor. Longtime HBCU basketball coach Alico Dunk becomes the 10th head coach in the history of the Virginia Union women’s basketball program. A former student-athlete at the University of Tennessee and East Carolina, Dunk began coaching in 2003 as an assistant on the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team.

Clark Atlanta’s bid for its first SIAC football championship in nearly half a century will move on without its leading receiver from last season. Armone Harris, an All-SIAC selection, has announced he is moving to the CIAA, transferring to Johnson C. Smith in his senior season. Harris initially entered the transfer portal in April, reportedly receiving offers from Alabama State, Alabama A&M, UTEP, Youngstown State, and Jackson State.
