Nolan Sabel scored three goals as top-seeded Seton Hall Prep, No. 3 in the NJ.com Top 20, cruised to a 12-2 victory over fourth-seeded Montclair in the Essex County Tournament semifinals at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field in West Orange. Joe DelMauro had two goals with an assists and Owen Dunleavy added two goals for Seton Hall Prep (12-2), which led 5-1 at halftime. Clark Rich had a goal with two assists, Jack Elfstrum and Bryce Pfeffer each added a goal and an assist.

Kimmara Peterson-Diggs pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out 14 and walking one, to lead Westampton Tech to a 6-0 victory over Medford Tech in Westampton. Emily Class had a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning for Westampton Tech (10-7). Medford Tech falls to 12-1 on the season. The N.J. JJ Drennan tossed 6.1 scoreless innings as top-seeded Seton Hall Prep, No. 4 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated eighth-seeded Caldwell, 9-0, in the 92nd Greater Newark Tournament quarterfinals at Porcello Field in West Orange. Drennan (5-0) struck out eight while allowing just four hits and a walk.

With four dangerous hitters on the court capable of picking up a kill at any time, Harrison’s offense is not just effective, but unpredictable. Those labels are a credit to the guy setting them all up, senior Jeremy Rivera. The quartet of Alattim DeLeon, Jonathan Petrillo, Yamil Espinoza and Ryan Manini all have 85 or more kills as part of the Blue Tide’s 18-0 start. And while the four might get the bulk of the attention and acclaim, that suits Rivera just fine.

It would be understandable for head coach Jim Pickel and the Kearny softball team to look at its 8-7 record and lament what could have been if not for injuries and a few ill-timed poor innings. Instead, despite the inconsistency, Kearny has reason to be optimistic as the calendar turns to May and the season hits the home stretch. The Kardinals were awarded the No. 4 seed in the Hudson County Tournament and the double bye into the quarterfinals that comes with it.
