1 INTRODUCTION Over two decades of cognitive neuroscience research have repeatedly located a region in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) that responds selectively to text (for review, see Caffarra et al., 2021). This region, termed “the visual word form area” (VWFA), is consistently activated when words are presented visually.
