By JASON ELLIOTT Sports writer The coaches might be new to this level, with a mostly fresh roster, but the expectations remain the same for the Coeur d’Alene “AA” Lumbermen American Legion baseball program. They’re going to compete and battle until the final out, one way or another. Jim Allison, who has coached the Single-A Lumbermen the previous three years, takes over the program this season, which begins on Saturday in the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Day Tournament in Missoula.

Shell qualified in girls singles for Coeur d’Alene, which finished tied for 10th in the girls team scoring last year. The Vikings were ninth in the boys last year. “I know I’m seeded seventh, but I’m a little nervous because it’s a different ballgame now,” Shell said.

And that was with a 15-foot cushion. “It definitely wasn’t my best meet, but it got the job done,” said Sims, who won the event with a throw of 146 feet, 6 inches to advance to state.

This weekend will be about surviving and advancing to the new look state baseball tournament starting next Thursday. Coeur d’Alene (16-4), as the fourth seed, will face the winner of Friday’s game between No. 9 seed Highland (18-9) and No. 7 and qualifier host Lake City (13-8) on Friday afternoon.

The Post Falls boys 4x400 relay team of seniors Cobe Cameron, Trenton McLean, Tallan McCracken and Gio Carlino are hoping that it pays off with some gold at the end of this season. Cameron won the state 5A 400 last year, diving across the finish line for his first title. “I trained all last summer and went to Texas for the Junior Olympics trying to get better for this year,” Cameron said.
