Lydiard Park Academy will reopen as normal on Thursday, May 15, after pupils and staff were evacuated on Wednesday morning. The school received a threat via email and told parents this communication claimed there was a “suspicious package” on the school site.

Last year, plans were submitted to Swindon Borough Council to build a drive-thru restaurant and a drive-thru coffee shop at plot four of Symmetry Park, off the A420 on the outskirts of Swindon. This parcel of land has since been put up for sale with offers in excess of £5.9 million welcomed.

Work on the £33 million scheme, which will deliver a new bus interchange and upgrades to the area, has been ongoing since 2022 and is now nearing completion. Swindon Borough Council recently released an update on its progress, with the most recent phase involving new dedicated cycle paths being tarmacked.

The supermarket chain had controversial plans to build a new supermarket in Royal Wootton Basset, on land at Marsh Farm near Brinkworth Road, approved in 2023. In late January 2025, work started at the fenced off site of the planned supermarket which appeared to be laying the foundations for the build.
Major A-road through county closed for days during roadworks

Resurfacing is taking place (file photo) A major A-road through Wiltshire has been completely closed during significant resurfacing works. The A303 has been shut in both directions between Longbarrow Roundabout and the A36 junction to the west of Winterbourne Stoke. This closure started at 9pm on Friday, April 25, and will remain in place until 6am on Monday, April 28, to allow crews to work safely at the scene.
