“This is a playlist of songs I listen to on the drive from Harpswell to Brunswick, ME. I take a single road along the peninsula for about 20 minutes, on a summer day I roll down my windows and let my hair blow around and the small quantity of trash I have thrown into the passenger side is probably blowing around too. I can’t see the ocean for the majority of the drive, but I can smell it, layered under pine and the occasional puff of woodsmoke.

The folks at Better Homes and Gardens and The Masiello Group in Bangor have been joining efforts for the past 12 years, to put together a massive yard sale. Why go through all that work? That's easy; because the money they raise from this yearly yard sale weekend goes to benefit a fantastic cause: Sarah's House Of Maine. What is Sarah's House of Maine? It's a Cancer Hospitality House, a special place where folks battling cancer can come to rest in between treatments.

My literary battery needs a chance to recharge after transcribing an episode of How Long Gone this week. We had technical difficulties with our guest’s recording, but somehow, we had a crudely AI-generated transcription of it, so we cleaned all the text up and released it as a Google Doc. Anyway, it’s kind of fun and different to read a podcast—also, no ads to fast-forward through. Hey, wait a minute... Our guest, Lauren Sherman from Puck, is really smart and cool.

No time for rumors and ramblings this week, as I’m too busy in New York. Thank god this Substack is still free…I went to Kernel this week, a new “restaurant” concept from the founder of Chipotle. I added the quotes because, technically, it’s a tech company offering edible products. There is no POS system or cashier and no substitutions or modifications.

I’m currently in New York for the week, I plan to eat at Foul Witch, Frog Club, Le Rock, and more, so stay tuned. Along with trance music, Mad Dog 20/20, and owning media, appointment television is crawling back into our lives. I’m not the first to talk about streaming bundles imploding back into cable TV. It’s all a mess; prices keep going up, and unless we’re midseason on White Lotus, it feels like scraping the bowl for resin most days on our home screens.

There is a difference between health food and healthy food. Health foods, to me, are eaten to feel better physically, yes, but more so to feel better about yourself. And nowadays, healthy foods can be almost anything. Many so-called healthy foods have become empty workaround hacks: a dairy-free chipotle mayo dip for my gluten-free tater tots, boxed mac and cheese that’s healthy because it’s made of garbanzo beans. As the health food market grows, so do our body mass indexes.
