A former youth detainee who claims he was forced to "fight other children" for the guards' "entertainment" and spend hours cutting grass with scissors is suing the Northern Territory government for negligence, assault and false imprisonment. In a statement of claim filed with the NT Supreme Court, the man — who cannot be named for legal reasons — said he was detained at Darwin's notorious former Don Dale Youth Detention Centre as a teenager between February 2010 and June 2011.

Nightcliff residents and friends of beloved Northern Territory supermarket owner Linford Feick have gathered to lay floral tributes and express their deep shock and sadness after his death. The 71-year-old was fatally stabbed at the Territory Friendly Grocer in Darwin's north on Wednesday afternoon, after confronting a man allegedly shoplifting. Police arrested an 18-year-old man that night and charged him with murder on Thursday evening.

A litigation funder will pocket one-sixth of a $180 million settlement in a historic Northern Territory stolen wages class action while the Aboriginal workers themselves will get "at least $10,000" each. Separately from the $180 million, the group's legal representatives at Shine Lawyers will get up to $15 million after a judge ruled the firm applied "an excessive level of human resources" to the case.

Residents in the remote Aboriginal community of Wadeye have effectively settled a racial discrimination lawsuit with the Northern Territory government claiming they were unlawfully deprived of adequate healthcare. As part of the settlement the government has said it would endeavour to increase interpreters, allocate at least two full-time doctors and establish a local dialysis service in the community within three years.
