Given their excess of talent at the catcher role, Seattle may be suffering from success when it comes to his future. One of the biggest storylines for the Seattle Mariners this year is the incredible success that Cal Raleigh has been having. Since he has essentially cemented himself as the best catcher in baseball, it's easy to forget that one of the hottest prospects in Seattle's system for the past few years was supposed to be his backup.

Things haven't exactly been going great for the Seattle Mariners as of late. Following a disappointing stumble in their most recent series, Seattle's first game against the Minnesota Twins ended in similarly heartbreaking fashion. The team's former ace has rediscovered what made him great with his new squad. The 2021 season was a great one for Robbie Ray. In his first and only full year with the Toronto Blue Jays, he led all AL pitchers in ERA (2.84), innings pitched (193.1), strikeouts (248), ERA+ (157), WHIP (1.045), and rWAR (6.9). For his efforts, he was nearly unanimously named the AL Cy Young Award winner and headed into free agency with his stock at an all-time high.

These two American League rivals might find a way to put their differences aside at this year's trade deadline. The New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners don't have much in common. One is a big-money franchise on the East Coast with a proven track record of winning, while the other is a scrappy team on the West Coast yet to make its first appearance in the World Series. However, they're starting to seem more like peers this season.
