The modern Mariners have their flaws, but how they handle their stars is not one of them. For a hot minute on Sunday, this week's series between the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners had all the makings of a prime-time showdown. Both would come into Monday's action fresh off sweeps, with a returning Logan Gilbert set to take on a powerful offense headlined by Rafael Devers. Well, now Devers is gone. Haven't you heard? If not, let's be clear that he's not gone from this earth.

The Mariners never had a shot at Rafael Devers. It wasn't that long ago that we were openly musing about the Seattle Mariners acquiring Rafael Devers in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox. It was nothing if not a fun exercise, and the idea seemed just realistic enough to be worth the effort. Things feel a little different now that Devers has actually been traded.

The Mariners came into their series with the Guardians needing a fresh start. They got a sweep. It would be difficult to overstate just how badly the Seattle Mariners needed a win this past weekend. Not just in a literal sense, but certainly in a broader sense after dropping eight out of nine and falling under .500 for the first time since April. Well, the Mariners got their win. Three of them if you want to get technical, and the third one over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday came in style.

The Mariners' latest series loss has imperiled their entire 2025 season. It was as recently as May 23 that the Seattle Mariners were eight games over .500 and 3.5 games up in the American League West. Those are now officially the "good ol' days," courtesy of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After entering Arizona with a two-game buffer between them and .500, the Mariners are now a game under at 33-34 following a three-game sweep. And as sweeps go, this one wasn't not especially competitive.

When even the word "sidearmer" is underselling it... By now, Seattle Mariners fans should know that the High-A Everett AquaSox have an absolutely loaded roster. But since arguably their best pitcher exists in relative obscurity, consider now a good time to get to know Tyler Cleveland. At 25, the right-hander is a little old to still be pitching at High-A. He was also a mere 14th-round draft pick in 2022, and he doesn't appear among the Mariners' top prospects for MLB Pipeline orBaseball America.
