Patagonia residents and volunteer firefighters passionately lobbied the Patagonia Town Council during a three-hour meeting last Wednesday to continue to contract with Patagonia Volunteer Fire & Rescue (PVFR) for the Town’s fire and emergency medical services. The special non-voting meeting, officially called a ‘workshop,’ featured presentations by PVFR Acting Fire Chief Zay Hartigan and Sonoita-Elgin Fire District (SEFD) chief Marc Meredith.

Patagonia ethnobotanist and author Gary Nabhan won a prestigious James Beard Award last Saturday for ‘Agave Spirits: The Past, Present, and Future of Mezcals,’ the 2023 book he co-authored with David Sura Pinero. The James Beard Awards, presented annually, are generally regarded as the Oscars of the American food world. Described by Julia Child as the “quintessential American cook,” Beard made this country aware of its own culinary history.

South32 Hermosa President Pat Risner and three newly hired consultants spoke with the Santa Cruz County Advisory Panel on the Hermosa Project at a Nov. 15 meeting at the Tin Shed Theater in Patagonia. Risner, South32 staff, and other members of the panel, including Carolyn Shafer of the Patagonia Area Resource Alliance, gave updates on various aspects of the Hermosa project (see sidebar below), but the bulk of the two-hour meeting was devoted to addressing a single topic: manganese.

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce Bracker will host an open house meeting next Wednesday, Sept. 27 in Patagonia regarding permitting for the controversial “Cross Creek Connector” (CCC). The CCC is a road currently being constructed by South32 across private property just north of town. The Sept. 27 event will run from 5-7pm at Cady Hall (346 Duquesne Ave). As the format of the event is an “open house,” members of the community may drop in anytime.
