There’s not a ton of ways to accurately tabulate how many humans put themselves upon LBI during a holiday weekend, but I can confidently say this Memorial Day weekend saw a high-viz tonload of humanity. The exact number of arriving and departing vehicles is more countable since the Causeway project strategically placed permanent cameras and traffic counters hither and yon. The problem is the devices can’t tally how many souls are seated within each vehicle, at least not hereabouts.

Memorial Day: a prime steppingstone toward summer. More importantly, it’s a time to remember those who gave everything so we’d be able to enjoy holiday weekends. This year, I offer a special remembrance to Hawaiian Joseph William Gaa Jr. of Kealakekua, Hawaii. He was a fellow student at Mauna Olu College, Maui, in the late 1960s. Despite having a college deferment from the military, Joe felt an overwhelming obligation to fight for America in the Vietnam War.

Last weekend was as ideal as LBI and nature can offer. To greet the weatherly wonderfulness, I opted to travel to the mysterious north, speaking of Barnegat Light – beyond which one falls off the edge of the Earth. My sojourn focused on the state park, knowing it would be very telling on both the fishing and piping plover fronts. Going there on my motorized bike, I was surprised to find things in the park were far from hopping, even on the visitorship side of things.

You likely heard a second arrest has been made in the Jones Road wildfire. It made all the national news broadcasts, with one station claiming the wildfire was still burning – as if N.J. allows massive wildfires to just eventually burn themselves out. The second person arrested is underage, 17-something. Authorities won’t reveal his name, though it will likely come out in the legal wash.

The Jones Road wildfire was as flameful an inferno as our Pinelands have ever experienced. The Greenwood Forest flames were California grade. As it now stands, the 15,300 burnt acres move it toward the top 10 of all-time NJ wildfires. However, that measuring system uses acres and not flame size, or the Jones Road fire would put heat on the top spot, with towering old-growth trees being fully engulfed by fire, some exploding from internal pressures within the trunks.
