    To mark the centennial of Ship Bottom’s becoming an independent municipality, I am looking back at the stories that helped create the town’s identity. In January 1903, several events took place on Long Beach Island that helped to inspire a series of stories and a book that would create much of what is known as “the lure of Long Beach.”Winter on the Island was a time of quiet. The hotels in Beach Haven and Barnegat Light were closed, and even avid outdoorsmen stayed home.

    Barnegat Light’s Wildflowers boutique and gallery owner Cricket Luker, advocate for the arts and animal rights, has a new idea for a community art project that would celebrate local historic properties and promote preservation efforts, by having artists paint portraits of old buildings to be installed seasonally somewhere in the town. The concept is “Preserving Our History Through Art,” Luker explained.

First place went to Phil Meara, a student of Tom Rutledge, for his watercolor painting “Wings,” which depicts a kitesurfer opening his kite on the beach.
