After almost a century in operation, West-Hodson Lumber & Concrete was recognized Friday night for its continued contributions, both to its employees as well as the community at large. Established in 1930, the company has had a storied history in Northeast Nebraska, beginning as a coal and lumber company in Osmond before changing its name and opening its first concrete plant in the 1980s in Creighton, subsequently branching out to Plainview, Norfolk and Bloomfield.

The advertisements promoting the Madison County Fair indicate the event will be Tuesday through Sunday, July 9-14, in Madison. For those working behind the scenes, plans for the annual gathering get underway months before. One such volunteer, Les Schultz of Carroll, said he believes the Madison County Fair is the finest of its kind in the state. "We are the only one to use a historical octagon building to display our exhibits," said Schultz, who serves as open class coordinator.

Tammy Stalzer’s efforts are working. Stalzer, the executive director of ALS in the Heartland, and her crew hosted the 17th annual Northeast Nebraska Area ALS Walk on Sunday at Skyview Lake in Norfolk. Stalzer didn’t have official numbers when she granted a quick interview with the Daily News but was pleased with the turnout. “Incredible,” Stalzer said. “Definitely better than normal.
