The Norfolk Daily News is a daily newspaper based in Norfolk, Nebraska. Established in 1877, it was bought by the Huse family in 1888, who have owned it ever since through Huse Publishing. Along with increasing the newspaper's reach, the Huse family also launched three radio stations in the surrounding area.

City approves area as blighted, substandard

The Norfolk City Council voted to adopt a resolution declaring an area between Highway 35 and Benjamin Avenue as blighted and substandard, paving the way to redevelop the area. The project was first introduced in a January 2024 subcommittee meeting to allow a study on the area for possible redevelopment. A developer, in this case Kelby Herman, takes on the financial responsibility to conduct that study.

MADISON — A Norfolk man convicted of drunken driving four times in the past seven years will spend at least the next eight months incarcerated. John Mrsny, 34, was sentenced by District Judge John Samson on Friday to two to four years in prison for aggravated fourth-offense driving under the influence and attempted driving without an ignition interlock device. He faced a maximum sentence of 22 years. Mrsny must serve a year of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Darren Wolf, 45, was sentenced by District Judge James Kube to 46 months in prison for possession of methamphetamine, third-offense driving under the influence, obstructing a police officer, criminal mischief and false reporting. He faced a maximum sentence of 63 months’ incarceration.

MADISON — A Norfolk man who assaulted an expecting mother while he was under the influence of methamphetamine was denied a request for probation on Thursday in Madison County District Court. Trevor Stattler, 34, was sentenced by District Judge James Kube to three years in prison for third-degree assault of a pregnant woman and attempted possession of meth. With good behavior, Stattler will be eligible after serving 18 months of his sentence. He’d already spent 147 days in jail.

The City of Norfolk held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Kohler Softball Complex on Thursday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. Nathan Powell, the city’s parks and recreation director, said there had always been the thought of making improvements to the area, which used to be filled only with gravel. While lockers had been added at Veterans Memorial Field, the Ta-Ha-Zouka location had no lockers.
