Cleveland City Hall’s neoclassical hallways are currently dotted with artwork for a special exhibition celebrating six local Black artists. “City hall has such beautiful architecture,” participating artist Christa Childs who goes by Christa Freehands said. “It's a space where when you're in it, it feels like a museum itself.” The exhibit is supported by Cleveland’s Transformative Arts Fund, administered by Rhonda K.

The studio is a sanctuary for Lauren Mckenzie, who, under the name Lauren Pearce, creates intricate, mixed-media portraits in Cleveland Heights. She can listen to the “Nosferatu” soundtrack and put aside distractions while she sketches the Black figures in her paper series or paints colorful textiles to use for their clothing. “I can always tell if I am not in the studio there's something off with me,” she said.

From drawings and prints to collages and cutouts, Pablo Picasso liked to experiment. “Picasso and Paper” at the Cleveland Museum of Art is an opportunity to learn something new about the influential artist and how he created. “He used traditional techniques, things like printmaking and drawing, but then he also used paper for things like collages, sculptures, experimental photography,” said Britany Salsbury, curator of prints and drawings at the museum.

Along the coast of Lake Erie, Cedar Point has been a beloved amusement park in the region for more than 150 years. Memorabilia sharing that history is now on view in the Cedar Point Historical Museum as of Wednesday within Downtown Sandusky’s Merry-Go-Round Museum. The majority of the items belong to self-proclaimed Cedar Point fanatic and Sandusky native David Kaman.

In this edition of Sketchbook, we meet Aaron Costic, an ice carver who creates intricate sculptures using a chainsaw, a tool not typically associated with art. Growing up in Medina, Ohio, he initially shunned traditional art lessons but found his passion in ice carving. After honing his skills through competitions, Costic became an internationally recognized artist, winning the World Ice Art Championships eight times and even presenting at the Winter Olympics.
