City leaders say they understand concerns about safety in uptown, especially after a recent homicide at the Charlotte Transportation Center on East Trade Street, but that there isn't an immediate solution to the problem. Police responded to a shooting about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and found Qualo Trevon Daniels, 31, with gunshot wounds, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. He died at a hospital. Police arrested Jeremiah Deshawn McCree, 20, on Wednesday, a CMPD press release said.

Some people in the Charlotte region may have woken up to a plastic burning smell Tuesday morning. It's coming from a large scrap metal fire at Metal Recycling Services, a Gaston County press release said. Firefighters responded to the fire at 3:27 p.m. Monday at 5401 York Highway, which is south of Gastonia. The fire was centered in a pile of crushed cars, the county's press release said.

Crime is down and arrests are up in the first three months of the year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said at a news conference Thursday. The department gave an overview of crime rates between Jan. 1 and March 31, comparing them to rates from the same time period in 2024, at its first-quarter public safety briefing. Overall, according to CMPD data, crime has fallen 6% citywide. "One challenge we face each day is not an offender or a crime trend," said Deputy Chief David Robinson.

The Muslim student who was assaulted at Ardrey Kell High School by a male classmate said she was trying to defend another girl in her class from his bullying just before he attacked her from behind, and said she did not fight with him. Her comments in an interview with The Charlotte Observer are in contrast to a statement from a public relations firm representing his family that claimed she "chose violence" and he defended himself.
