Max Homa will be playing golf on the weekend for the first time since the Pebble Beach Pro-Am at the start of February. After missing the cut in five consecutive tournaments since then, the 34-year-old Cal alum rediscovered his rhythm at Augusta National on Friday, shooting a 2-under 70 to make the cut at the Masters.

The day after Cal football assistant coaches Vic So’oto and Terrence Brown were named co-defensive coordinators, both shared their vision of how the arrangement will work. And both expressed gratitude to coach Justin Wilcox for giving them promotions. So’oto, who has focused on outside linebackers the past three seasons, became emotional when asked what this opportunity meant to him. “I don’t think I can put into words what that means, coming from Coach Wilcox,” he said.

Collin Morikawa, chasing a championship in his third golf major, found himself tied for second place after firing an eagle on the 13th hole in the opening round of the 89th Masters on Thursday. But the day didn’t end well for the world’s fourth-ranked player. Morikawa, the 28-year-old Cal grad, struggled home with three bogeys over the final four holes and wound up with an even-par 72 and part of an 11-way tie for 27th place.

The Cal women’s gymnastics team failed to advance as a group to the NCAA Championships but seniors Mya Lauzon and Maddie Williams have earned spots in individual events at the April 17 competition at Fort Worth, Texas. The Bears had hoped to qualify as a team out of the Tuscaloosa regional last Sunday. They needed a top-2 finish to advance but finished third. A year ago, Cal made it to the NCAA nationals and finished second. Instead, the Bears will pin their hopes on Lauzon and Williams.

Tee times for the first two rounds of the Masters were unveiled with Michael Kim getting the earliest start in Thursday’s first round among four former Cal players competing at Augusta National. Kim, 31, tees off at 5:02 a.m. PT on Thursday and 8:10 a.m. on Friday. He’ll play the first two rounds with Mike Weir and Cameron Young. Kim’s strong start to 2025, including a streak of five straight top-20 finishes, has him ranked No. 12 in the current FedEx Cup standings.
