The Kenai Central baseball team defeated Soldotna 4-3 on Monday in Northern Lights Conference action at the Soldotna Little League fields in Soldotna. The Kardinals improved to 2-1 in the league and 3-1 overall. The Stars, the three-time defending Division II state champs, played their first Division II competition of the season and fell to 0-1 in the league and 2-7-2 overall. This is the third straight season Kenai defeated Soldotna in the first game of the season between the two rivals.

Kenai Central finished sixth, Soldotna finished 10th and Homer finished 13th at the Rally in the Valley Softball Tournament, which finished Saturday. The Kardinals lost to Sitka 9-2 and Ketchikan 11-2 on Saturday to finish the tourney at 3-3. Against Sitka, the Wolves got to Lola McEwen for five runs — two earned — on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, and Kennah Gregory for four runs — three earned — on a hit in 1 1-3 innings.

The Soldotna and Seward track and field teams traveled to Seward for meets Friday and Saturday. Friday, the teams competed in the Kodiak Invitational. Kodiak and Soldotna tied for the boys top spot with 43 points, while Seward had 16. For the girls, SoHi won with 49, while Kodiak and Seward tied at 24. Saturday, the squads competed in the Kodiak Quad on the Rock. The SoHi boys won with 52, while Kodiak had 36 and Seward had 5.

The Ketchikan boys won the Kenai Invitational Cup and the Wasilla girls won the Homer Soccer Tourney to headline soccer action Saturday on the Kenai Peninsula. The Kings marked themselves as a team to watch among contenders for the Division II state title by topping Division II Grace Christian on Thursday, Division II Kenai Central on Friday, and Division I Wasilla by a score of 3-1 on Saturday at Ed Hollier Field at Kenai Central.

The Soldotna and Wasilla baseball teams played to a 5-all tie Saturday in the third-place game of the Buddy Dale Invitational in Wasilla. The Division II Stars are now 2-6-2 and have played only Division I competition so far. SoHi, the three-time defending Division II state champs, hosts Division II opponent Kenai Central, third at state last season, at 6 p.m. Monday.
