The weather at the Division I state track meet Saturday at Dimond High School in Anchorage lurched back and forth between sunny brilliant and rainy cold. So did the performance of the Soldotna boys track and field team. In the end, the skies cleared just in time for the Stars boys to win a team title, tying with Chugiak at 72 points. The SoHi girls finished third with 62 points after a far more steady performance, with Chugiak winning with 107 and Dimond second at 97.

After an opening day loss on Thursday, Kenai Central won twice on Friday and twice on Saturday to secure second place at the Northern Lights Conference baseball tournament in Anchorage. Saturday, the Kardinals (14-4) defeated Homer (12-9) 11-3 to secure an automatic state berth and a spot in the second-place game. Kenai then defeated Palmer 4-1 for second place. Kenai 4, Palmer 1Everett Chamberlain secured second place for the Kardinals with a sterling complete game.

Top seed Kodiak won its third straight Northern Lights Conference tournament title by defeating No. 2 Soldotna 10-6 on Saturday. Both teams qualify for the Division II state tournament, which will be Thursday through Saturday, June 5 to 7, in Anchorage. Soldotna will go to the tournament for the second straight year. The Stars (23-8-1) got that state berth with a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to defeat No. 3 Kenai 10-9.

Top-seeded Kodiak defeated No. 2 Soldotna 4-3 in the semifinals of the Northern Lights Conference tournament at Kodiak on Friday. The Bears clinch one of the tournament’s two Division II state berths. Kodiak can win its third straight tournament title at 1 p.m., or in the 3:30 p.m. if-necessary game if the Bears lose at 1 p.m.The Stars still have a chance at a state berth and a tournament title. At 11 a.m., Soldotna plays the winner of the 9 a.m. game between No. 3 Kenai and No. 4 Palmer.
