JDHS JV soccer team plays at Ketchikan

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears junior varsity boys soccer team played against the Ketchikan varsity on the road Tuesday and Wednesday at Esther Shea Field. JDHS fell 4-1 on Tuesday. Crimson Bears sophomore defender Ibrahima Diouf scored on a 40-yard free kick for their lone goal. The Crimson Bears let in two own goals during the contest and were outshot almost 20-1 according to JDHS travel coach Tim Harrison.
JDHS softball splits with conference foe Colony

History was made as the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé softball team opened their first official home Railbelt Conference games on Wednesday, the first on the new Adair Kennedy Park field, and sophomore Brynn Wheeler recorded the first Crimson Bears hit, freshman pinch-runner Kiki Gallettes-Swafford scored the first run, junior Alayna Echiverri recorded the first RBI and junior Gwen Nizich put all those firsts together as she put the first true home run over the center field fence.

High school basketball seniors from around Alaska attended the 2025 Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star events over the weekend at Anchorage’s Grace Christian High School. The AABC promotes the sport, its coaches, players and officials through the event. This was the 16th annual all-star gathering — it was halted two years due to COVID-19 — and 92 players were chosen by the AABC selection committee for the 2025 games.
Traveling Crimson Bears tear up Kodiak Bears

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears track team had a strong showing against the Kodiak Bears in the Bears Dual On The Rock meet at Kodiak over the weekend. Seniors Finley Hightower and Carter Harralston won the boys 100 meters in 11.52 and 12.05, respectively, and senior Johnathyn Kestel won the 200 in 24.19. JDHS freshman Bella Connally won the girls 100 in 12.83 and the 200 in 26.83.
JDHS softball finishes Sitka Tournament

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears softball team finished their season-opening tournament on Sitka’s Moller Field with a combined 3-3-1 record over the weekend. JDHS, now in the Division I Railbelt Conference had opened the tournament on Thursday defeating new conference rival Wasilla 10-4 and losing to DI Cook Inlet Conference Chugiak 15-1. All tournament games were played under a 65-minute time limit.
No track, no problem for Petersburg Vikings

In the last two decades, the Petersburg High School Vikings track and field team has had roughly 20 individual state champions, a multitude of podium finishes and handfuls of third, fourth and top-ten team finishes at the state tournament…not to mention the Region V titles that moved most of these athletes and teams on to Anchorage. Not extraordinary across the range of Southeast — until you consider they have no track to speak of.

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears softball team came out of their offseason hibernation hungry for large round yellow balls of goodness. It found plenty Thursday on Moller Field in the Sitka Varsity Invitational as the team defeated Wasilla and fell to Chugiak. “This tournament lets us try different kids in different positions, try different lineups,” JDHS head coach Lexi Razor said.

Klawock’s Jean Jackson made history on March 29 at the 2025 Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament, becoming the first woman inducted into the tournament’s Hall of Fame. “I’m so honored,” Jackson said when receiving the award. “I feel so completely honored. I’m speechless.”Jackson’s basketball journey was noted in high school when she led Klawock to four straight region titles (1986-1989) and was an all-conference selection each year.
Saving Yakutat one basket at a time

This is not uncommon in many homes across America, but in this tiny town of roughly 500 this basket is one of the last links to a failing basketball tradition that once won regional and state tournaments.

Neither the current Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé track team nor athletes from the now-defunct Thunder Mountain High School joining the program this year have traveled to the Kodiak Invitational Track & Field Meet, the site of this weekend’s first contest of the season for the Crimson Bears. “I think the transition has been great, we’ve come together as one big team and we’re really looking forward to traveling to Kodiak,” JDHS co-head coach Jessie Stringer said.
