“YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A MINDSET in football, no matter what,” says Micahi Danzy. “I don’t want to lose in football.” And that, he explains, is why he has what it takes to flourish in the 400. “That’s where I get my mental toughness from.”The 19-year-old Florida State wide receiver stunned many when he produced the fastest collegiate performance of the year in capturing the ACC 400 crown in 44.38, making him the seventh-fastest Junior ever.

LAWRENCE, KANSAS, May 15–17 — Just one of the headliners at the Big 12 Championships, BYU senior Meghan Hunter stunned in the 800 with a 1:58.99 breakthrough. “I saw the time [with 200 left] and thought, I still feel good, I’m going to do it. I’m going to break 2:00. How far under can I go?”A powerful drive coming off the last turn saw her extend her lead to 10 meters as she became the No. 3 collegian ever. Her PR before the start was the 2:00.67 she ran in Provo earlier in the month.

LAWRENCE, KANSAS, May 15–17 — A month ago, Houston’s Jamar Marshall hurdled a 13.13 with a big 5.2 wind behind him. A sign of things to come? The senior came to the Big 12 Championships with a legal PR of 13.39. He improved that to 13.37 into a headwind in the heats. In the final, with the race flipped to take advantage of the wind, he churned out another 13.13, this one with a legal 0.3 wind.

IN HER FIRST FORAY over the steeple barriers this spring, BYU senior Lexy Halladay-Lowry made a splash, cutting more than 4 seconds off her best with a 9:18.05, a time that moved her to No. 5 in collegiate history. She will definitely be a force in the NCAA steeple later this season, but that’s no shock to anyone who watched her at the NCAA Indoor, where she raced to 2nd in the 5000 and 3rd in the 3000. That made her the top American in both.
