SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA, March 29 — Telahun Haile did not win the TEN, but he probably ran the best race of the day at the annual event aimed at delivering World Championship qualifying times. The 25-year-old Ethiopian, best known for placing 4th in the 5000 at the ’19 Worlds, missed the start, and had to run an extra 90m or so just to get to the line long after the others had departed. It took him four laps to catch up, as Harvard alum Graham Blanks led the pack behind two pacers.

NANJING, CHINA, March 21–23 — A double gold-medal performance made Chris Bailey the winningest U.S. athlete at the 20th edition of the World Indoor Championships. Bailey led the first-ever medal sweep in the 400 (and the second overall in meet history). The world leader at 44.70 started in lane 6, with Brian Faust in 5 and Jacory Patterson in 3. At the gun, it was Faust who rocketed out, making up the stagger on Bailey in the first 100 and leading the field through a 21.29.

“WHAT’S BEEN SO EXCITING this year and this indoor season is the idea that I don’t really have a ceiling.”And that is the most honest explanation of how Isabella Whittaker, now a grad student at Arkansas, demolished the American Record at 400 in running 49.24 to win the NCAA Indoor title, the second-fastest performance in history. “I’m not trying to cap any sort of ceiling for myself,” says the 23-year-old Penn grad. “I’m going into the outdoor season with the same energy.
