    It’s not always cool to be in school during the heat wave. Winnipeg was one of 11 communities that set heat records on Monday, with a high of 35.6 C. The heat can lead to hot days sitting in the classroom. The Winnipeg School Division said 32 facilities have full air conditioning throughout their buildings, 27 are partially air conditioned, and 19 have no air conditioning at all.

    Fire crews battled a stubborn fire at Altona’s landfill Wednesday and Thursday. Altona’s fire chief and 22 volunteers responded to the blaze late Wednesday afternoon, with the assistance of the Winkler fire department. “Fires in landfills are never easy to put out.” said Altona Mayor Harv Schroeder. Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman said after two hours of efforts the fire appeared to be out, but emergency personal had to return two more times as it reignited again in other places in the landfill.

    A South Osborne business owner isn’t on board with a bus stop directly in front of her shop, saying it has taken away valuable street parking impacting her sales. Lee Heywood and her husband used to park right in front of Black Market Provisions on South Osborne to grab a quick bite to eat. Now they have to drive around back and use the parking lot. “Not quite as quick as when we used to be able to park in front and run in,” said Heywood.

    Laurie Nealin said she was able to walk on Waterfront Drive near her home a few weeks ago and not see any riverside encampments. She says they’d been dismantled, and the area around them cleaned up. “When all the encampments were gone, we were amazed and pleased and hopeful,” said Nealin. However, Nealin said in a matter of a week or two, some tents and a lot of debris like grocery carts and mattresses were back.

    Winnipeg city council’s monthly meeting has been adjourned to Friday. At a brief meeting Wednesday morning, an emotional Mayor Scott Gillingham asked for the adjournment and said he would explain the reasons why later Wednesday morning. Gillingham has a news conference scheduled for 11:30 a.m.This is a developing story. More details to come.
