‘Hard for students to focus’: Battling the heat while in the classroom

It’s not always cool to be in school during the heat wave. Winnipeg was one of 11 communities that set heat records on Monday, with a high of 35.6 C. The heat can lead to hot days sitting in the classroom. The Winnipeg School Division said 32 facilities have full air conditioning throughout their buildings, 27 are partially air conditioned, and 19 have no air conditioning at all.
Landfill fire in Altona prompts battery disposal cautioning

Fire crews battled a stubborn fire at Altona’s landfill Wednesday and Thursday. Altona’s fire chief and 22 volunteers responded to the blaze late Wednesday afternoon, with the assistance of the Winkler fire department. “Fires in landfills are never easy to put out.” said Altona Mayor Harv Schroeder. Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman said after two hours of efforts the fire appeared to be out, but emergency personal had to return two more times as it reignited again in other places in the landfill.
South Osborne shop owner not on board with bus stop

A South Osborne business owner isn’t on board with a bus stop directly in front of her shop, saying it has taken away valuable street parking impacting her sales. Lee Heywood and her husband used to park right in front of Black Market Provisions on South Osborne to grab a quick bite to eat. Now they have to drive around back and use the parking lot. “Not quite as quick as when we used to be able to park in front and run in,” said Heywood.
Neighbour dismayed after previously removed encampment reestablished

Laurie Nealin said she was able to walk on Waterfront Drive near her home a few weeks ago and not see any riverside encampments. She says they’d been dismantled, and the area around them cleaned up. “When all the encampments were gone, we were amazed and pleased and hopeful,” said Nealin. However, Nealin said in a matter of a week or two, some tents and a lot of debris like grocery carts and mattresses were back.
Winnipeg mayor to hold news conference after adjourning council meeting

Winnipeg city council’s monthly meeting has been adjourned to Friday. At a brief meeting Wednesday morning, an emotional Mayor Scott Gillingham asked for the adjournment and said he would explain the reasons why later Wednesday morning. Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives to pick new leader this weekend

An election is taking place in Manitoba before the federal one on Monday. The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba is set to choose a new leader on Saturday to replace former Premier Heather Stefanson. Adjunct professor of political studies Chris Adams said it’s been a long campaign, so the race might not be top of mind. “It’s taken so long for us to get to this April 26th date, I think people have just forgotten,” said Adams.

With just days to go until election day, some undecided Manitoba voters have a choice to make. “I haven’t made up my mind yet,” said Jules Friesen. “I’m not too sure yet, it’s hard to determine who I’m going to vote for.” He couldn’t say for certain where he’s going to mark his X on his ballot, as he hasn’t read or seen all of the party platforms. Manitoba’s highest court is siding with the City of Winnipeg, overturning a $5 million penalty over the Parker Lands saga. “I was really pleased to see the outcome of the appeal decision,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. In 2023, a trial judge ordered the city pay $5 million to Andrew Marquess, the developer and owner of Gem Equities.

The Conservative campaign office in Brandon was supposed to be for Larry Maguire, instead, Grant Jackson had to move in. “So it was a pretty quick turnaround,” said Jackson. “We had to build a campaign team. Those are hard conversations to have with colleagues when a team member is leaving.”Maguire was the Conservative MP in the Brandon-Souris riding and was expected to run again. But as the campaign was about to get underway, he had to step aside for health reasons.

Julia Mora, 18, is on her way to vote for the first time. “I think it’s nice to have a voice,” said Mora. While she’s excited to cast a ballot, she and others her age say their peers aren’t flocking to the voting booth. “I don’t think enough, I really don’t think enough,” said Mora. “I know some of my friends aren’t, and I’m trying to encourage them to. I think it’s important.”Historically, it’s tougher to get younger people to the polls in Canada compared to other age groups.
