There may be a lot at stake in a swing city seat in Winnipeg. Chris Adams, an adjunct professor of political studies, said Winnipeg South is known as a bellwether riding, meaning historically, whoever wins there, wins the general election. “Winnipeg South, as that goes, so goes the nation,” said Adams. The seat has flipped back and forth over the decades between the Conservatives and Liberals. The Liberal incumbent is Terry Duguid, who is also a cabinet minister.

The race in the Winnipeg West riding is a political trilogy, with the Conservative incumbent and Liberal candidate going head-to-head again. “This is like the repeat of the repeat here with two candidates,” said Curtis Brown of Probe Research. In 2019 and in 2021, Conservative Party of Canada candidate Marty Morantz defeated Liberal Party candidate Doug Eyolfson in the riding formally known as Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley.

Lamoureux is betting on himself again as he’s running for re-election. He said he decided to run long before his party turned around their fortunes in the polls.

A plan to add a cell phone tower in a Westwood neighbourhood has some residents concerned. Patricia Chegus lives right next door to a bus stop on Rouge Road in Westwood. She’s not on board with what’s planned for the grass area in the bus loop. “It’s quite an eyesore, we’re also miffed about the location because it’s in the bus loop,” she said.

The election in Manitoba’s northern federal riding, is viewed as a two way race, with the longtime NDP incumbent in a fight to hold onto her seat. Brandon University professor Kelly Saunders said the stars could be aligning here for the Liberals. “I think if the election were held today, Niki Ashton would be in trouble,” said Saunders. Churchill-Keewatinook-Aski is the largest riding in Manitoba. Ashton has been the MP since 2008.

Lavack is no stranger to the community. She is the former director of the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain and, before that, was in charge of Festival du Voyageur.
