I have a special Halloween treat for readers of this newsletter. Recently, I entered a story in the first ever Wicked Writing contest put together by and on the official Macabre Monday newsletter. I deeply appreciate the time and energy they put into bringing the contest to life. My story ultimately earned second place, finishing behind Rare Dawn, a haunting tale you can read in the latest newsletter.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine. Welcome once again to Sci-Friday, a game I play every week where 20-some writers on Substack team up to publish something related to science fiction on the same day. We generally give you some kind of recommendation by way of a list, and that’s what I’ll do today. I’ll link to some of those other lists I’ve made below, at the end of this article.

I hope October has you excited to watch some horror films! If not, maybe I can at least bring you a little bit of nostalgia for today’s Macabre Monday. Each week, I share a recommendation for some kind of horror for you to check out, whether movies, TV, or something else. Just like with Sci-Friday, Macabre Monday has now grown into a larger community of folks making recommendations. If you’re looking for something to watch, this crew has you covered. is a bit of an emcee for this event.

Welcome to another Macabre Monday, where I share some kind of consumable entertainment with you in the horror genre. Like Sci-Friday, Macabre Monday has taken on a life of its own, with lots of writers making similar recommendations. Jeff Kinnard approached me with this concept a few weeks back, and we’ve seen it take off since then. If you’re interested in any more recommendations from smart folks who love the horror genre, Jeff’s Note does a nice job of linking to them.

Sci-Friday is back, and what I mean by that is that I’m not going to trick you into looking at beautiful pictures of dogs I’ve known and loved. That was last week. Instead, today we’re looking at five of my favorite sci-fi comedies. Even after some consideration, I hesitate to say this is my “top five” for this subgenre; there are loads and loads of contenders out there, and the category could be considered very broadly.
