The Incredible Hulk was the highlight of my week. It ran from 1977 until 1982, so the Hulk must have been the most important thing in the world, at least until He-Man, GI Joe, and The Transformers took over during the following years. This show was crazy interesting! Dr. David Banner (as opposed to Bruce Banner in the comics) is exposed to dangerous gamma radiation—they call it an accidental overdose, which is kind of silly, since there’s no such thing as a “proper dose” of gamma radiation.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine. Welcome once again to Sci-Friday, a game I play every week where 20-some writers on Substack team up to publish something related to science fiction on the same day. We generally give you some kind of recommendation by way of a list, and that’s what I’ll do today. I’ll link to some of those other lists I’ve made below, at the end of this article.

There’s a lot of really exciting developing technology out there. You can create beautiful, complex images by saying words, and the process may as well be magic: it looks like you’re casting a spell, and then things just happen. Waving your hand in order to make a virtual reality scene disappear from your worldview is right around the corner. A voice just like anyone ever recorded can now be generated to read you bedtime stories.

Sci-Friday is back, and what I mean by that is that I’m not going to trick you into looking at beautiful pictures of dogs I’ve known and loved. That was last week. Instead, today we’re looking at five of my favorite sci-fi comedies. Even after some consideration, I hesitate to say this is my “top five” for this subgenre; there are loads and loads of contenders out there, and the category could be considered very broadly.
