The only way April 22 could have begun worse for Guardians starter Tanner Bibee would have been if somehow the bases were loaded with Yankees before leadoff hitter Ben Rice stepped to the plate in the top of the first inning. Bibee’s first pitch of the game was a 96 mph fastball. Rice hammered it over the wall in left-center field. The next batter, Aaron Judge, drilled a 97 mph fastball to right field. The Yankees fans that had infiltrated Progressive field smelled an ambush.

McKenzie, out of options, was designated for assignment on April 21 ahead of the start of a three-game series with the Yankees at Progressive Field. The Guardians called up right-handed reliever Zak Kent from Columbus and needed a roster spot for him. McKenzie, 27, a first-round draft pick from Royal Palm Beach Community High School in Florida in 2015, was the odd man out.
