On March 30, we published an exclusive special report called “41 Seconds” by Tony Bartelme, a senior projects reporter. It quickly grew into one of the most-read stories we’ve ever published and attracted widespread attention. Tony spent time in a rare, on-the-record interview with the highly decorated Marine colonel who made the split-second decision to eject from his malfunctioning F-35B stealth fighter jet in September 2023 as the plane streaked over North Charleston.

The pilot later told investigators he was unsure whether he could trust the instruments and he feared an engine had failed, potentially leaving the plane out of control. He ejected over North Charleston. But the plane flew on, disappearing from contact.

This is the third column in a series commemorating Sunshine Week. Last October, reporters Tony Bartelme and Seth Taylor teamed up on a project that pulled back the camouflage on a taxpayer-funded welcome center in Sumter that essentially doubled as a hunting retreat for local officials and their friends. The city built the center as part of an ongoing effort to preserve land around Shaw Air Force Base.
