    The Coweta District Attorney's office is seeking additional funds as county staff prepares the fiscal year 2026 budget. On Thursday morning, county staff presented a draft of the budget to the Coweta County Board of Commissioners during a work session. The proposed budget is a 1 percent increase from last year's. The draft budget of $115,791,141 breaks down as:$23,640,776 for general government. $15,005,624 for judicial. $51,169,583 for public safety. $10,036,984 for public works.

    A Newnan man was arrested on a rape charge June 19. Ernest Thomas Hines, 33, was arrested for rape and terroristic threats and acts. According to Investigator Chris Robinson with the Newnan Police Department, the incident reportedly occurred in the area of Dodson Street just after midnight Thursday. Robinson said Hines is not a known threat to the public. The crime wasn’t random, and Hines reportedly knew the victim, he said.

    Amendments to the county's animal ordinance may remove the animal services board from cases against vicious dogs and redirect them to the probate court. At its Tuesday night meeting, the Coweta County Board of Commissioners discussed changes to the ordinance and ultimately tabled the decision to its Aug. 5 meeting. Commissioner Al Smith was not present at the meeting. The commissioners were divided on the changes.

    The Senoia Police Department will be adding new vehicles to update its fleet. At its Monday night meeting, the Senoia City Council approved the purchase of seven new vehicles for $442,285. According to Senoia Police Chief Jason Edens, the first payment of $101,064.64 will not need to be made until July 2026. Additional payments will be made for four additional years after the purchase, Edens said.

    In response to the potential impacts of the Project Sail Data Center, a Coweta resident performed an environmental impact study on the development. The study was completed by Chris Soltis, a hydrogeologist for a state environmental agency. Soltis said he conducted the study on his own and not on behalf of his employer. The site for Project Sail is on an 832-acre property located in Sargent that is currently zoned for rural conservation.
