    The death of renowned United Methodist theologian Richard Hays of Duke Divinity School perhaps marks the end of the neo-Anabaptist, pacifist era. His obituaries all cited his very recent liberalized views on sexuality, overturning his previous more traditionalist views explained in his 1996 A Moral Vision of the New Testament.   But his pacifism, as also explained in that book, was perhaps more significant and revealing.

    Today honors Martin Luther King Jr. He was a chronic adulterer who betrayed his wife and ordination vows. He kept a Communist Party USA member as a close advisor. He rejected Christian orthodoxy while in seminary. MLK was also a great American. He successfully persuaded the nation that the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution apply to all people. He insisted that Christianity and natural law required dignity and decency for all.

    Assisted suicide has been an issue before the general public for at least the last generation but is now emerging as a more potent and insidious threat in the 2020s. It is potent because more jurisdictions have legalized it or are considering legalizing it (most notably Great Britain), giving the proposal some momentum.
